NSAL hosts a variety of activities during the academic year. These initiatives are the heart of our school spirit and play an essential role in fostering the social development of teens. They provide a blend of tradition, choice, and opportunities to cultivate social responsibility. During this transformative phase of life, teens are eager to make a positive impact and effect change in areas they care deeply about. Through these activities, students can explore different pursuits and social engagement, channeling their passions into meaningful actions. We welcome and encourage new initiatives and ideas that inspire our students to achieve more.
The North Star Academy Laval House System is designed to encourage and reward student leadership, school participation, and community involvement at every level. It fosters a sense of pride and belonging, mentoring opportunities, and strong relationships among students across different grades. Participation in houses promotes collaboration and school spirit, as students engage in inter-house competitions spanning academics, athletics, arts, cultural activities, and community service. This system instills pride in our students while building a connected and supportive school community.
Students become members of a house when they first enroll at NSAL; they remain in the same House until graduation. Houses are multi-grade level to encourage a whole school approach to citizenship and collegiality.
A friendly competition exists between the House teams. Students can earn points as a team during Monday assembly activities, during special events and as individuals by completing tasks launched by the faculty at various times of the year.
Each House has a minimum of two faculty assigned as mentors. These mentors follow the students throughout the grades, providing an opportunity for students to get to know faculty who may not currently teach them or to stay in touch with teachers who have taught them in the past. Research confirms that having a positive relationship with a teacher in a school has significant impact on teens’ feelings of belonging and provides a safety net to turn to at various times in their high school career.
