Technology & Digital Responsibility

In our Senior School, we foster independence and digital responsibility by teaching students how to make informed choices about their use of technology.  We implement sessions on cybersecurtiy and online etiquette to help students make wise decisions about their digital presence and maintain a healthy balance in their online and offline lives.

Through Google Classroom, students collaborate on projects, conduct research, and develop effective study skills—key competencies for an evolving digital world. We also provide our students with specialized learning platforms to support independant learning. Our Senior School program is designed to further foster independence, digital citizenship, and readiness for post-secondary success.

Grade 9 Academic Courses

English Language Arts  632-306

The Grade 9 English Language Arts course continues to develop students’ literacy, communication and analysis skills. Through reading and discussion, students will enhance their critical understanding of various texts and the overarching themes found in literature. They will plan and draft various texts and reports (spoken and written) keeping in mind the context, purpose, meaning an target audience.

French Second Language 

At Grade 9 we continue to build on the foundations of French language acquisition from the Middle School programme and offer several levels of French to respond to the individual needs of our students; Français de base, (MEQ regular programme) and Français Enrichi for students with advanced language skills. In addition, we offer a preparatory programme for students with little to no previous instruction in French language or who are new to the province of Quebec.

The main objective of this French course is to ensure that students continue to develop their linguistic skills of reading, writing and speaking in French working towards a greater understanding and participation in the Francophone community of Quebec. By continuing to expand their basic vocabulary they will increasingly grasp the intention behind the texts heard, read or seen, which helps them understand their meaning. They will also learn to effectively convey their message in authentic, varied and meaningful communication situations both written and oral.

Français enrichi  635-306

The Grade 9 French Enrichi course focuses on strengthening students’ ability to  communicate  fluently in French through presentations, discussions, and analytical writing. Students will read novels, watch films, and study other forms of media to enhance comprehension. In addition to grammar practice, students will write informative texts, poetry, and critiques. Classroom activities also include debates and vocabulary-building exercises to refine both oral and written communication.

Mathematics  563-326

The Grade 9 Mathematics course builds upon prior knowledge with a focus on real-life applications. The curriculum includes teacher-led instruction, group work, independent study, and formal assessments. Students will engage in situational problems that require mathematical reasoning in practical contexts . Key topics include real numbers, algebraic expressions, equations and inequalities, relations and functions, area and volume of solids, isometry and similitude, probability and statistics.

Science and Technology  555-306

The Grade 9 Science and Technology program integrates multiple scientific fields—including physics, ecology, astronomy, geology, and biology—with relevant technological applications such as mechanical design, medical advancements, and food and mining technology. The central theme of the course is the human body and its systems, encouraging students to understand how scientific and technological developments influence everyday life. All students are required to participate in the NSAL Science Fair.

History of Quebec and Canada   585-304

Students begin the Grade 9 History course by exploring the societies of Canada’s first occupants, examining the characteristics of the two main Indigenous groups and their interactions with the newly arrived French settlers. The course continues with a focus on the French and English societies, paying particular attention to their demographic, economic, cultural, and political aspects.

Study Methods  617-342

This course is unique to NSAL and is designed to improve students’ efficiency in both academic and personal settings as they start Senior School. By evaluating their current study methods, learning styles, and challenges, students will gain personalized strategies to optimize their performance. With school projects and life goals as a model, students will implement actionable techniques that enhance their learning and productivity. Global citizenship projects, academic and career guidance, as well community service are also incorporated into the course.

In this course, students are encouraged to express their musical tastes, preferences, and goals, which help guide the selection of music pieces and instruments. Through group performances, students will explore various sound sources and compositional techniques while applying musical theory and developing technical skills. They will gain a deeper understanding of music’s historical and cultural significance, the mechanics of performing and how their performance influences both fellow musicians and the audience. This course emphasizes the unison of theory and practice, as performing together is where their knowledge comes to life.

Visual Arts  668-304

In Grade 9, students continue to build on their ability to interpret the world aesthetically. The year is divided thematically; Identity, Self & the Place, Material Relationships and Art for Impact. There will be a heavy emphasis on experimentation with materials and techniques, as well as on collective artmaking and participation in community life. Making connections to Global Citizenship and social justice through art will be a continuous thread throughout the programme. Students are encouraged to take artistic risks and incorporate their personal interests into their projects while adhering to the specific criteria and objectives of each assignment.

Physical Education  543-302

This course focuses on improving students' athletic abilities, teamwork, and overall fitness. Students will work toward mastering sports such as badminton, volleyball, ultimate frisbee and resistance training. Additionally, they will engage in health-related activities that enhance flexibility, cardiovascular endurance and muscular endurance. In addition, students will participate in CPR training.

Grade 10 Academic Courses

In the Grade 10 English Language Arts course, students will read a variety of texts (spoken, written, and media) to gain a deeper understanding of their meaning and themes. They will review and implement the correct usage of rhetorical strategies, varied sentence structures, and punctuation when creating different types of content.in order to produce high-quality texts in multiple formats (spoken, written, and media). Students will also begin preparations for the Grade 11 English Language Arts Quebec Ministry Exam.

Mathematics Options

In Grade 10, students must begin to plan their pathway for post-secondary studies. Students who wish to continue their studies in the field of Social Studies or Liberal Arts may choose the Mathematics Cultural, Social and Technical Option while those who choose to pursue the fields of Commerce or Science are required to take Mathematics Science Option (SN) provided they meet the placement criteria. Both courses culminate in a Quebec Ministry of Education exam.

 

Mathematics – Cultural, Social and Technical Option (CST)  563-414

This course emphasizes the relevance of mathematics to real-world problems and decision-making. Learning is centered on key mathematical objectives: interpreting reality, generalizing patterns, making predictions, and informed decision-making. Students will develop mathematical competencies through problem-based applications, enhancing their ability to connect mathematical concepts to everyday life. Topics include analytic geometry, functions, methods of solving systems of equations, triangles and trigonometry, and statistics.

Mathematics - Science Option (SN)  565-436

The Grade 10 Mathematics SN course builds upon foundational math skills with a  focus on advanced concepts. Instruction includes teacher-led demonstrations, group work, independent study, and formal assessments. Students complete contextual exercises and situational problems designed to foster mathematical reasoning in practical situations. Topics include polynomials, functions, isometry and triangle similarity, analytic geometry, similarity and equivalence, trigonometry, and correlation.

Science and Technology  555-444

The Grade 10 Science and Technology course is mandatory for all students and culminates with a Quebec Ministry of Education exam. The program integrates multiple scientific fields including physics, ecology, astronomy, geology, and biology along with relevant technological applications such as mechanical design, medical advancements, and food and mining technology. These are studied in the context of cultural references. All students are required to participate in the NSAL Science Fair.

History of Quebec and Canada  585-404

This course is a continuation of the Grade 9 History course and provides an in-depth historical exploration of Québec and Canada from 1840 to the present day. The course is divided into four different eras which discuss the formation of the Canadian federal system, nationalism and autonomy, the modernization of Quebec and societal choices in Quebec. Students will be prepared to write the Quebec Ministry of Education exam at the end of the course.

Culture and Citizenship in Quebec   580-404

The Grade 10 Culture and Citizenship in Quebec program is intended to prepare students to exercise citizenship in Quebec society, both now and in the future. To do so, students will learn to recognize themselves and others. They will read a variety of texts and apply basic reading comprehension and analysis skills. Students will engage in critical thinking processes and will interact with their peers in order to engage in analysis and discussion. Students will exchange their ideas by means of oral discussion and artistic expression and communicate their understanding through written texts, presentations and projects. Community Service will also play an integral part of the course and all students will participate in the Youth Philanthropy Initiative program

Grade 10 Option Courses

Students must choose one of the following two options in accordance with their selected post-secondary path; Digital Citizenship OR Environmental Science and Technology.

 

Digital Citizenship (Social Studies Option)  552-464

This class will introduce the student to the world of digital citizenship. As an individual who will be more and more engaged in digital medium, the student will look at the world of media through various lenses; media wellness, privacy and security, digital footprint and identity, relationship and communication, cyberbullying and hate speech, as well as news and media literacy.

 Competencies:

  1. Examines their role in various media and through various lenses
  2. Interprets and evaluates the accuracy, perspective and validity of digital media.

Science – Environmental Science and Technology (EST)  558-404

The Environmental Science and Technology (EST) course is an advanced class which prepares students for future science studies and is taken in addition to the mandatory Science and Technology Course 555-406. The program integrates multiple scientific disciplines—physics, ecology, astronomy, and geology—with various technological applications, such as mechanical design, medical innovations, and food and mining technology. This course is a prerequisite for Grade 11 Chemistry and Physics.

They will also explore health related components including Kinesthetic Feedback (understanding muscle movement and the body’s response to exercise) and cardiovascular endurance and strength training.

Grade 11 Academic Courses

In the Grade 11 English Language Arts course students will continue to enhance and refine their literacy and communication skills in preparation for the year-end Quebec Ministry of Education exam. They will produce high-quality content while considering context, purpose, and audience. Additionally, they will practice to improve their pre-writing strategies, peer editing and literary response.

Mathematics - Scientific and Technical Option (SN)  565-506

This advanced math class focuses on analytical and applied mathematical reasoning for students wishing to pursue continued studies in Business or Science. Students complete contextual exercises and situational problems designed to foster mathematical reasoning in practical situations. Topics include optimization and algebraic expressions, exponential and logarithmic functions, trigonometry and vectors, analytic geometry and conics.

Contemporary World  592-502

This course explores global issues affecting society today. Students will examine different viewpoints on world events and consider the impact of these issues on humankind. The course aims to foster global citizenship by encouraging students to take proactive stances on important global challenges.

Financial Education  602-522

The focus of this course is to introduce the students to the topic of the economy and personal finance. This will be done by exploring the economy as it is today as well as discovering the multitude of options available for young individuals in terms of their own personal finances. Topics include consuming goods and services, entering the workforce, pursuing an education.

Culture and Citizenship in Quebec   580-502

The Grade 11 Culture and Citizenship in Quebec program is intended to prepare students to exercise citizenship in Quebec society, both now and in the future. To do so, students will learn to recognize themselves and others. Topics will include construction of the self, social and cultural integration, social groups and power relations. Students will exchange their ideas by means of oral discussion and artistic expression and communicate their understanding through written texts, presentations and projects. Community Service will also play an integral part of the course.

Grade 11 Option Courses

Students must choose one of the following two options in accordance with their selected post-secondary path:

Option 1: Social Studies -  Entrepreneurship & Biology

Option 2: Sciences -  Chemistry & Physics

Entrepreneurship  604-564

This class will introduce the concept of an “entrepreneur” to the students. This will  include building a profile of an entrepreneur and seeing where each student lands within this profile. There will also be an emphasis on the creating and implementing of an entrepreneurial project. Through this process, students will learn about creating a business plan, advertisement, marketing, budgeting and human resource management.

Biology  535-544

This course introduces students to the fundamental principles of biology, fostering a deeper understanding of scientific concepts and their impact on society. Students will explore the diversity of living organisms, the levels of biological organization, evolutionary processes, and ecological relationships. Human physiology is also a key focus, helping students comprehend the complex systems that sustain life and how biological phenomena shape the world around us.

Chemistry 551-504

This course focuses on the study of chemical phenomena and the principles of chemical science. Students will expand their scientific knowledge by exploring chemical reactions, properties of matter, and the processes that drive chemical interactions. Through hands-on experiments and theoretical analysis, students will learn to define scientific questions, conduct investigations, and provide evidence-based explanations for their results. Topics include properties of gases, energy changes in reactions, reaction rates, and chemical equilibrium.

Students in Physics apply scientific and technological knowledge to explain physical phenomena and deepen their understanding of key physics concepts. They will develop problem-solving strategies and acquire both conceptual and technical skills, enabling them to define scientific problems, investigate solutions, and justify their methodological approaches and conclusions. Topics include geometric optics, kinematics, dynamics and transformation of energy.
